Woods says he will be ready for U.S. Open Tiger Woods was seen on crutches and wearing a walking boot. He didn't look like a golfer who was ready to walk the course at Congressional in about three weeks. But apparently, that is the plan for Woods. Woods said he plans to play at the U.S. Open, and will begin training in about a week. Golf fans are going to be happy to see Woods play in the event, but how ready will Tiger really be? That is a huge question given where he stands now.Woods said that he feels better and can play through pain. He reminded people of 2008, when he won the U.S. Open despite a major leg injury. Tiger said the injury then was a lot worse than the injury now.

Of course, Tiger's golf game is a lot worse now than it was then. He had momentum heading into that U.S. Open. Woods is a year and a half removed from a PGA victory. When he loses, it is often ugly. Back in 2008, Tiger was still immortal on the links. Now, he isn't anywhere close to that level. The 2011 season has been even more unkind to Woods than 2010 was. He made a run at the Masters, but his short game doomed him. He lasted a mere nine holes at The Players Championship before being done in by poor play and injuries. The 2008 Woods might have been able to click things on and dominate, but the 2011 Woods can't do that. He needs practice and confidence, two things he won't really get by not playing until the U.S. Open. Any golfer can tell you how daunting that event is, including Woods. Woods no doubt wants to win, but he should be happy if he finishes. A top-10 finish would be a huge momentum builder for Woods heading into the British Open in July. But that is a long shot.Despite poor play and injuries, Tiger is still the most important golfer around. There's a mix of people who want to either see him turn it around and win again and people who simply enjoy watching him struggle. I still think Tiger will win again, but I also think the Tiger of old is never coming back.In any case, he will give golf fans something to watch at the 2011 U.S. Open.
